About Us

History

The Merrymouth Inn has stood on the main A424 highway midway between Stow-on-the Wold and Burford since the 13th Century around 1260AD. Originally part of the Murimuth family estate some 700 years ago and then named The Murimuth Arms, the Inn has a fascinating history. There are rumours of escape tunnels built in 16th century during the Reformation that run from the Inn’s vaulted cellars found at the north end of the building to the nearby Abbey. There are reports of the notorious highwaymen Tom, Dick & Harry Dunsdon from Fulbrook frequenting the Inn in 18th century. The farm, stables, barn and the Hunters Lodge were built between 16th and 17th Centuries and the reception area and kitchens were added more recently in 1960’s and 1970’s to link the courtyard & carpark to the rest of the Inn.

Of late, the Inn has undergone a number of ups and downs and was acquired in December 2021 as and addition to a family business, the building was in a very sorry state but has been sympathetically renovated by Andrew, Wendy and Charles who now run the Inn, cottages and restaurant.

Facilities

The Inn has a large bar & restaurant area with a further two function rooms catering for in excess of 80 people in one sitting, along with 11 en-suite lodging rooms, three self-catering cottages, two apartments and substantial parking. There is a large external courtyard seating area and substantial lawn areas with a children’s play area and stunning views of the surrounding countryside.

Offerings

The restaurant and bar serve excellent quality home cooked food made with ingredients sourced from local suppliers and boast a nice selection of well-kept draft and real ales. The Cotswold Merrymouth Inn prides itself on providing the best quality produce at sensible prices. The Inn makes all of its own dishes, sauces, gravies, ice cream and desserts in the kitchens at the Merrymouth. Sunday roasts at the Inn are becoming very popular since the kitchens started serving them in January 2022. Owners and staff believe that good quality food, accommodation and a friendly service can be provided to all without a huge price tag. The Inn’s kitchens officially opened in 2021 on bonfire night and served Caribbean brisket and BBQ pulled pork baps to over 350 attendants. A feat that was repeated in 2022 and was very well received by local and not so local attendees.

Events & Activities

Christmas 2022 fine-tuned the Merrymouth team’s ability to run functions and events with a very successful series of ‘black tie’ events. ‘open mic’ nights, corporate parties and large family functions. The Inn has also rekindled a series of pub games by joining the local darts league, promoting regular pool competitions and introducing activities such as Brush Parties for the budding Rembrants.

September 2023 saw the launch of The Merrymouth Inn as a Blues and live music venue with a significant number of quality artists scheduled  for 2024.
